MY FAMILY TRADITION

The folklore or “tradition” of mischievous, magical Christmas elves has roots in many different countries. Our magical elves are based mostly on the Norwegian elf tradition.

My grandmother came from Norway. As an immigrant in the 1920’s, her family settled into a highly populated Scandinavian area of Wisconsin. Her family worked very hard not to appear “foreign”; however, two traditions remained with her – the food and the elves.

As a child, I can remember that most Norwegian meals revolved around fish, which I hated! My grandmother’s elves, however, gave us a sense of excitement, wonder and comfort. She had two elves, a boy and a girl. They were small porcelain figures that were always “moving.” Her elves were always hiding in different spots, being playful and protective.

When my grandmother passed away in 1986, our family members went to her house one last time and were allowed to choose something as a rememberance. Of course, I chose the elves. I knew that when I started my own family, that I would want these playful elves to bring joy and excitement to my children.

My grandmother’s elves now hold a place of honor in my home. These elves have had to survive several cross country moves. The girl elf has lost a leg and the top of her hat. It doesn’t matter though, because beauty is only skin deep in the eyes of the believers. My grandmother’s elves have been perched on my windowsill for years, watching over my family. Every time I look at them, I smile and I think I can still see the twinkle in their eyes!
